How do I cancel an invoice?

This article explains how to create a credit note using the BILLY invoicing tool.

Written by Xavier PONCELET

Cancelling an invoice means issuing a credit note. Using the BILLY invoicing module, you can do this in just a few moments.

💡 It is not allowed to cancel an invoice that has already been sent in the accounts. The only option is to issue a credit note cancelling the sent invoice.

How do I cancel an invoice?

Go to the "Income" page to find the complete list of all your invoices. You can view them using the small eye icon on the right 🧐

If you created your invoices in BILLY, you can cancel an invoice via the 3 dots menu and then the "Cancel" option.

A new page opens and you enter the editing view of the credit note ✍ It displays the number of the cancelled invoice as its title.

The credit note contains exactly the same line items as the original invoice, but the amounts are shown as negative values. You can adjust the lines and amounts if the cancellation is only partial.

If nothing needs to be changed, you simply need to enter a date 📅 for the document to be complete.

All that's left is to confirm and send the document to your client to finalise the process 🙂

💡 If the original sales invoice was created with software other than BILLY, the cancel option will not be available. In that case, you can issue a credit note directly in BILLY by creating an invoice with the amounts entered as negative values.

A client has overpaid

In this case, it is a refund. You reimburse the overpaid amount to your client via a bank transfer. This is not a credit note.
